Polly James is an artist based in the Welsh Borders in the town of Hay-on-Wye. Polly read English Literature at Exeter University and went on to work in London for a number of years before returning to the Welsh Borders to draw full time in 2018.
Influenced by a love of wildlife and classical training at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence and the Sarum Studio, Salisbury, Polly’s charcoal and pencil drawings focus on light and life in animals and birds. Her approach combines traditional technique with a contemporary feel, often bringing together detailed focus with fluid simplicity to capture the essence of the subject and life.
Polly grew up on a livestock farm in Herefordshire and as a result has been surrounded by nature from a very early age and from this a love of the outdoors and all things wild followed. She finds inspiration from observations of wildlife and agriculture at home and abroad. Polly now specialises in drawing predominantly in charcoal and exhibits locally near Hay-on-Wye, Herefordshire, as well as undertaking private commissions.
